Canada Day

1.7 juhlistetaan Kanadan syntymäpäivää Canada Dayn merkeissä. Oma Canada Dayni koostui Sackvillen paraatista, joka kesti noin tunnin, ja sisälsi jänniä vanhoja autoja, säkkipillejä ja karkkia jakavia paraatilaisia. Karkkia ei osunut kohdalle, mutta sellainen vanha kunnon mehujää kylläkin, mikä on sellaisessa pienessä muoviputkilossa, joskus muksuna ostin niitä sinisaaren autogrilliltä (Y) Oli mehujään arvostus aika korkealla, kun oli melkein tunnin istuskellut kadun varressa auringonpaahteessa.

1.7 is Canada's birthday, which is celebrated as the Canada Day. My Canada Day consisted of a parade in Sackville, that took about an hour, and consisted of nice old cars, bagpipes and people giving out candies. I never got any candy, but a good-old fashioned freezie did come to my way and let me tell you, after sitting an hour in the hot sun it was very much appreciated. 

Paraatin lisäksi kävimme pyörähtämässä Sidney Crosbyn kotipaikkakunnalla, ja ajoimme Lawrencetownin hiekkarannalle, joka on suosittu surffauspaikka, ja aika komea, pitkä hiekkaranta melko suurine aaltoineen olikin kyseessä. Seisoin ensin vedessä, joka hädin tuskin peitti jalkapöytäni, ja seuraava aalto nostattikin vedenpinnan puoleenväliin pohkeita.

In addition to the parade we went for a little ride to Sidney Crosby's hometown, and drove to the Lawrencetown beach, which is a popular spot to surf. The beach was a nice and long, and had quite high waves, as I was standing in the water while it barely even covered my feet, and the next wave brought the water level half way up my calves.

Illalla lähdimme vielä katsomaan Halifaxin ilotulitusta kaupungin vastarannalle Dartmouthin puolelle, sillä päättelimme sillä puolen olevan vähemmän ihmisiä kuin Halifaxin waterfrontilla. Ilotukset ammuttiin proomulta keskellä lahtea.

In the evening we went to see the fireworks in Halifax, on the opposite side of the city on the Dartmouth side. We figured there would be less people on that side than in the Halifax waterfront, as the fireworks were shot from a barge in the bay.

The Cabot Trail

Kartan epämääräisissä merkinnöissä pysähdyimme pidemmäksi aikaa: neliö kävelemämme hiking trail, pohjoisessa Meat Cove, koillinen pallura oli eräs ranta, joilla pysähdyimme, sen alapuolella majapaikkana toiminut kylä, ja aivan kuvan alareunassa oikealla yksi rannoista, joilla pysähdyimme. - The markings on the map: the square-like shape the hiking trail we too, the one up north was Meat Cove where we stopped, the north-east was one of the beaches we stopped at, the one below that was the town we slept in, and the one down at the edge of the picture is one of the beaches. 

Vietimme tuossa torstain ja perjantain pääasiassa autossa istuen, ja lähdimme kiertämään Cape Bretonin Higland National parkin Cabot trailia. Torstaina lähdimme kohti pohjoista puiston läntisellä reunalla. Kävelimme myös noin 9,2km pituisen Skyline hiking trailin, joka lienee yksi maisemareitin tunnetuimmista kävelyreiteistä, ja maisemat reitin päässä olivatkin näkemisen arvoisia. Kiersimme koko lenkin, mutta jos olisi halunnut kulkea vain lyhyemmän osan edestakaisin, olisi sen pituudeksi tullut reilu 7km. Yövyimme jossakin pikkukylässä, taisi olla Cape North kyseessä, ympyröity karttakuvissa keskiosassa mökissä reitin puolivälin paikkeilla, ja yritimme metsästää auringonlaskua huonolla menestyksellä - pilvet ja sumu päättivät, ettei auringonlaskulle ole tarvetta. Perjantaiaamuna matka jatkui Meat Coveen, joka on ilmeisesti Nova Scotian pohjoisin paikka, ja ajoimme tien päähän niin pitkälle, kuin pääsi - seuraava pysäkki on kuulemma Newfoundland ja Irlanti. Meat Covesta jatkoimme Cabot Trailin itäistä rantaa, pysähdyimme parilla rannalla, ja söimme aamupalan mukavassa kahvilassa Ingonishin kylässä (vohvelit oli hyviä). Sieltä sitten pikkuhiljaa ajeltiin taas takaisin tänne Halifaxin liepeille. Sanat eivät reitille tee oikeutta, joten antaa kuvapaljouden puhua puolestaan. Varoituksen sanana, kuvia on paljon.

We spent Thursday and Friday mostly sitting in a car and drove around Cape Breton Highland National Park on Cabot Trail. On Thursday we started heading north on the western side of the park. We also walked the around 9.2km Skyline Trail hiking trail, which to my understanding is one of the most famous hiking trails in the park, and the scenery was well worth the walk. We walked around the full look, but if you only wanted to take the shorter journey to the look-off, it would've been around 7km in length. We stayed the night in a small village, I believe it was Cape North, in a cabin, and tried to hunt for a sunset with no luck. Apparently the clouds and the fog decided there's no need for a pretty sunset that night. On Friday morning the journey continued first to Meat Cove, which is apparently the northernmost point of Nova Scotia, and we went up until the end of the road - apparently the next stop would've been Newfoundland and then Ireland. From Meat Cove we continued on Cabot Trail on the eastern shore, and ate some breakfast in Ingonish in a nice little cafe (the waffles were quite nice.) From there on out we continued our journey slowly back until we reached Halifax again. Words can't make justice to the trail, so I'll just let the pictures speak for themselves. Just as a warning, there's a lot of pictures.

 Meat Cove

 Tässä kohtaa ajattelin "Miksi Suomen ainoat vuoret ovat Yksinäiset vuoret" - At this point I thought "Why are the only mountains in Finland the Lonely Mountains" 

 Tämä Ingonish Beach on kuulemma yksi alueen kuuluisimpia rantoja, jolle satuimme nousuveden aikaan. Ranta toimii selvästi myös mukulakivikasvattamona. - This Ingonish Beach is apparently one of the most famous beaches in the area, we ended up there during the high tide.
